Hearing Aids – Why I Love My Hearing Aid

When someone by e-mail to me telling me that he had been diagnosed with a hearing loss and was deadly afraid of getting a hearing aid (a common reaction among adults who acquire a hearing loss), which published in the forum by asking members of the Forum explained the reasons for your loved or liked to have hearing aids.

“Tonight I have an email from someone whose doctor diagnosed a hearing loss and the person who is afraid of having to wear a hearing aid. So how to tell about why the love of your hearing aid?”
-Calling all lovers of hearing aid

Their responses are below:

“I believe that my digital hearing aids to be my best friends, because it allows me to function much better in the world. Put your fears aside and be glad we live in an era of so much technology. Our parents only have to suffer”

“Hello! I am a hard of hearing woman who has used two hearing aids all her life. Whenever I have to go to the audiologist for new love to see me because I’m happy to be there, most people irritable and just go because their relatives do. I am so grateful that help me to the role. Without them, they simply would not be able to get the audience in the world. I will never forget walking into a grocery store after buying a new pair, a better than I had been able to pay before, and the audience that the music played in Publix! Who knew! It takes a little time to adjust your hearing if that is poor and suddenly hear of everything. Hang in there! time is not going to be as chaotic and you can appreciate what that play. At some point in my view will get worse and then I’m going to embrace the deaf culture. For now, I have a choice. ”

“I love my HA. It helps me to capture conversations in restaurants and bars, places that could not communicate before. You can also hear a little bit of music around me and they are great in concert. I recently attended to a concert and put my hands on stage to feel the chords. With my headphones, just the voices are done through a beautiful experience. I was afraid that in the first performers would be angry, but is pleased and proud . Let me put my hand on his chest and sang to me after the show. It’s lovely.

Here’s a funny story when I got my first HA. I classification of documents (I am a teacher) and I hear a Darth Vader kind of noise. I held my breath to concentrate and disappeared! Oh well.

I returned to the ranking and I heard again! I was very scared to be alone in the house, so I got up to investigate. Now, I have heard not only rough, but also a robbery! I walk all over the house, more and more freaked out until I realize: DUH! I’m hearing my own breath and rubbing my clothes together. What an idiot! I laughed my ass out of myself. Has been so long since I heard that I do not remember. Your friend, as HA. ”

“I’m sitting in Germany and just came here by chance, using search engines. It took me 24 years before I was ready to take the hearing aid. But finally recognized that learning in college, later working in my business and everyday life is much more pleasant, easy and enjoyable if you hear (almost) everything! I do not bother other people to be aware that I was hard of hearing. This is much better then that seems stupid, as happens easily, if you can not follow a conversation. So if you think you suffer from a hearing loss: Go to the doctor immediately! He knows best, if you need a professional cleaning of the ears ;-) Or hearing-AIDS. In any case, life is too short to waste a single minute of it audible. ”

I love to sing in the car. I love the sound of my voice of the bride. I love being able to speak with my nephews on the phone. I love my headphones. My mom does not like having to yell at me!

The headphones are not perfect. Sometimes I cannot understand what other people are saying, no matter how hard I try. Other people are concerned about how they are. Knowing What happens is more important than how I look at it, or what other people think. Honestly, most people whose announcement yet and I have a full ITE, I mean that it fills the entire ear. Mainly, I like my new ITE to come into the purple!

I can hear my cats purr! I forgot how soothing and comforting is that the sound. On the other hand, and more importantly, I can finally babysitter for my grandson without being out of my mind, with more audience to worry when he wakes from a nap or at night. I am grateful for the digital technology that puts me back in the groove hearing. Make sign ASL, and the love of my Deaf friends of the deaf community, but I am very grateful that the headphones were working for me. (Yes, it has been a little difficult to learn to accept the “chaotic” that sounds’ assault ‘now my ears, but life is a learning process and this program does not want to miss anything!)

Hearing Aid Basics

There are different types of hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are prevented from moving to the inner ear. This may be caused by a variety of problems including the accumulation of earwax (cerumen), infection, fluid in the middle ear (ear infection or otitis media), or a perforation of eardrum. Neurological (nerve) hearing loss develops when the auditory nerve or hair cells in the inner ear are damaged by aging, noise, illness, injury, infection, head trauma, toxic medications or an inherited condition. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both drivers and sensorineural hearing loss. A conductive hearing loss can often be corrected with medical or surgical treatment, while the sensorineural hearing loss usually can not be undone.

People with hearing loss may experience some or all of the following problems:

* Difficulty hearing conversations, especially when there is background noise.
* Zip, roaring or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
* Difficult to listen to the radio or television at a normal volume.
* Fatigue and irritation caused by the effort of listening.
* Dizziness or problems with balance.

How do I know if I have hearing loss?

If you think you might have hearing loss, visit your doctor, who can refer to an otolaryngologist or audiologist. An otolaryngologist is a physician who specializes in ear, nose and throat disorders, and will investigate the cause of hearing loss. An audiologist is a hearing health professional who identifies and measures hearing loss and will conduct a hearing test to assess the type and degree of loss.

How can I help my hearing aids?

Based on the hearing test results, the audiologist can determine whether hearing aids will help. The headphones are particularly useful in improving the hearing and speech comprehension of people with sensorineural hearing loss. When choosing a hearing aid, the audiologist will consider their hearing ability, work and home activities, physical limitations, medical conditions, cosmetics and preferences. For many people, the cost is also an important factor. You and your audiologist must decide whether one or two hearing aids will be better for you. The use of two hearing aids may help balance sounds, improve their understanding of words in noisy situations, and make it easier to locate the source of sounds.

What are the different types of hearing aids?

There are several types of hearing aids. Each type offers different advantages, depending on its design, levels of amplification and size. Before purchasing any hearing aid, ask if you have a guarantee that he will prove it. Most manufacturers allow a 30 – to 60-day trial period during which aid can be returned for a refund.

There are four basic styles of hearing aids for people with sensorineural hearing loss:

* In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids fit completely in the outer ear and are used for mild to severe hearing loss. The case, which has components, is made of hard plastic. ITE aids can accommodate added technical mechanisms such as a telephone, a small magnetic coil contained in the hearing aid that improves sound transmission during telephone calls. ITE aids can be damaged by earwax and ear drainage, and their small size can cause adjustment problems and feedback. They are not usually used by children because the casings need to be replaced as the ear grows.
* Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are used behind the ear and are connected to a plastic mold that fits inside the outer ear. The components are kept in a case behind the ear. Sound travels through the mold in the ear. BTE aids are used by people of all ages from mild to profound hearing loss. BTE poorly fitting molds can cause feedback, a whistle sound caused by adjusting the hearing aid or by accumulation of fluid or earwax.

Hearing Aids – Too Expensive?

One of the biggest complaints that both the deaf and hard of hearing ordinary people is the high cost of hearing aids. Hearing people whose hearing losses are not severe enough for cochlear implants must wear hearing aids. The problem is that hearing aids are not usually covered by health insurance plans, but are cochlear implants.

A cochlear implant is a prosthesis considered by private insurance companies, but headphones are not. For example, the paper CIGNA HealthCare coverage position number 0190: cochlear implants and auditory brainstem (Revised 5/15/2007) states: “The cochlear implant is an electronic prosthesis that stimulates the cells of the spiral ganglion auditory for provide a sense of sound to people with hearing disabilities. ” At the same time, the coverage of Cigna Position Number 0093: Headphones (Revised 5/15/2007) states: “The headphones are specifically excluded in most CIGNA HealthCare benefit plans.”

Medicare also does not cover hearing aids (to see the full Medicare statement on non-coverage of routine examinations and hearing aids, go to Medicare.gov ’s Page cover).

Why the headphones are not covered
One reason hearing aids are not covered because it is pure numbers. There are many more hard of hearing people that deaf people who can benefit from cochlear implants. People can lose their hearing as they age and need hearing aids. Things could change because of technology improvements cochlear implant that allows hard of hearing people to use the implants.
Many can not afford hearing aids
The problem is that hearing aids can be quite expensive. There is a dizzying array of headphones available today, and better performance are the most expensive. Every now and then, someone e-mails me asking for help for hearing aids for themselves or a child. I have met with parents of hard of hearing children who are bitter over the fact that cochlear implants are often covered by insurance, while the headphones are not.
Seniors without headphones
In May 1999 the National Council on Aging survey of seniors showed that 55% of costs cited as a reason for not using headphones. The survey also found that untreated hearing loss has “serious emotional and social.”
Limited help for hearing aids
Some nonprofit organizations and service organizations (such as the Lions Club) to help people, especially children, get a headset. There are also banks used to hearing aids.

Basic analog hearing aids have become more affordable as technology declines, but many people whose hearing loss require more expensive advanced technology of hearing aids can not afford them. Some people have used the Internet to purchase new and used headphones at your own risk.
My personal experience
Even I struggled with the high cost of hearing aids. When my insurance does not cover hearing aids, I wondered if it was worth spending thousands of dollars for the upgrade. Due to a progressive loss, I had to keep buying more powerful aids. After the last purchase of hearing aids, told the audiologist, “That’s it. I can not afford to keep doing this every five or six years. If I lost more hearing, I’m not buying another round of aid.” Having lost more audience, I did stop. This was my personal choice.
My opinion on the hearing aid costs

Deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, should not have to resort to charitable organizations for a basic device that is so essential to the operation. If cochlear implants are covered by insurance, hearing aids should be, too. In my opinion, a cochlear implant is essentially a surgically implanted hearing aid. Although a cochlear implant functions differently than a hearing aid, both cochlear implants and hearing aids serve a similar purpose – helping their users to listen to. Manufacturers are entitled to recover its research and development costs, but the headset should be priced more reasonably.

Hearing Aids – Insurance

The health insurance companies have refused to cover hearing aids. While it is understandable that refuse to cover for the elderly on the basis that too many people who want or need, what about the children? As the cost of hearing aids continues to rise, more parents and individuals are challenging the insurance companies.

Shortly advice is available on the Internet about how insurance companies to pay for hearing aids. Listen Up on the site, there is a list of states with laws or proposed legislation to deal with the hearing aid coverage, relations with the advice of the fight against insurance companies over coverage for hearing aids, and one of the names of insurance companies that are known to have paid for hearing aids.

Some insurance programs and supplemental programs do address hearing aid coverage. Examples are PlanPlus, ESCO, and Midwest Hearing Industries. Some health insurance plans allow for an extra premium, to add more hearing and vision coverage.

As the U.S. population ages and hearing aid costs continue to rise, efforts are increasingly in state legislatures to insurance companies to pay.

At present, the focus of promotional efforts is to get coverage for hearing aids for children as a start.

Comments from visitors about
I like many articles on About.com including his own, but I would like to comment on his statement on About.com saying that insurance companies do not want to cover hearing aids for adults, because too many people who need them. The insurance companies already cover the cost of eyeglasses, which are required by many more people with varying degrees of vision problems and need to be replaced much more frequently. The insurance company should not determine what is medically necessary by the patient, who should be the responsibility of the physician. These companies already cover cochlear implants, which cost 2-5 times more than a hearing aid does not – and that also needs to be replaced frequently and maintained. Of course, fewer people can benefit from these – but they are much more expensive. Therefore, the response that hearing aids are more expensive and too often required, it makes no sense.

Hearing Aid Batteries – Common Questions

Q. How do I know what size I need?
A. A few years ago, the hearing aid battery standard of the industry and the size of the battery came with a color code to help you remember the size of the battery.

On the back of each battery is a tab that you quit to “activate” the battery. Each color corresponds to a different size. Now the numbers and colors for each size are all standard. Sometimes you may see other letters after the numbers, but those letters are arbitrary. The most important thing to remember is the size and color as shown in the table below.

If you can not remember your size, color keep in mind. His (hearing health professional) will also have this information at your table and you can see that for you any time.

P. How long does the battery before last that I have to change?
A. That depends on the type of hearing aid you wear. Some hearing aids require more power and thus will have a shorter life than others. Digital hearing aids require more than a hearing aid battery out, simply because there are more complicated in the circuits of a digital hearing aid. Normally, the battery life can vary anywhere from 5-7 days. If you are experiencing a short battery life, the headset can not be working properly, and should be evaluated. His Sonus Hearing Care Professional can assess your hearing aid and check the battery contacts, as well as evidence of leakage from the battery. If the headset is not performing to specification, their (hearing health professional) you can send your hearing in for repair.

About one visitor wrote: Just a little tidbit of information about the batteries. It took a while but finally figured that after speaking to many people why some batteries to die so soon. Well, while that for transport trucks sometimes get very hot inside. The chips are celebrated with a sticky glue. If the tabs unsticks in the heat of the battery is activated. When he gets colder than is pasted back into the battery. Therefore, the extra storage in the car batteris bad idea.

P. What happens when I take the tab of the battery?
A. The most common hearing aid batteries are called “Zinc Air”, which means that the battery works by mixing zinc with outdoor air. Once the tab has been taken in front of a battery, the headset is activated and the battery will continue to stay active. The battery can not be “turned off” by placing a chip on the battery. The best advice is to keep the cards until he needs a new battery. If you have a dead battery, keep them separate from its new battery supply. Do not store together in the same case as this could lead to the accidental mixing of the batteries. While leaving the tab on your batteries, you can expect a shelf life of about three years. However, after three years, the battery may not work as well.

P. Where can I buy batteries?
A. There are several ways you can buy hearing aid batteries. Most pharmacies will carry a small selection of batteries. You can also buy the batteries at any office of Sonus. Sonus.com has a large selection of batteries that can be delivered directly to your door.
